Insider Reporting - Important Changes To Current Reporting Requirements

On January 22, 2010 the Canadian Securities Administrators (“CSA”) approved National Instrument 55-104 - Insider Reporting Requirements and Exemptions (the “Instrument”), which is expected to come into force on April 30, 2010. The Instrument consolidates the principal insider reporting requirements and most exemptions from these requirements in a single national instrument. The CSA expects the Instrument to make it easier for issuers and insiders to locate and understand their obligations and help promote timely and effective compliance with insider reporting requirements.

Condo Liens - Nothing Could Be More Secure

Virtually every organization attempting to collect money that it is owed will run into collection problems. And, at one time or another, that organization may look, with coveted eyes, towards the Banks. Banks, when they loan monies, generally have extensive security packages in place, which, in addition to promissory notes and general security agreements, often include mortgages against real estate. In fact, it is the Banks that look covertly towards the security that a Condominium Corporation can put in place with respect to common expense arrears.

Is A Re-Brand Of The Canadian Trade-Marks Act Imminent?

CIPO's Consultation
In an effort to maintain “a modern and efficient trade-marks regime” that is globally competitive, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (“CIPO”) is re-considering whether Canada should ratify the Madrid Protocol. CIPO last hosted an open consultation about this issue in 2005. The impetus stems from Canada's desire to remove barriers with Canada's priority trading partners (the US, the EU, China and Japan). In fact, CIPO states that of the 79 countries that are signatories to the Madrid Protocol, Canada is the only developed country that is not yet a party.

Community Initiative

Keyser Mason Ball, LLP is now participating in the Gift of Reading Program at Nahani Way Public School. This program provides kindergarten students with the opportunity to read with one of our volunteers in a quiet setting. The aim of this program is to strengthen the children's reading skills and also to encourage them to get hooked on reading.

Our volunteers attend Nahani Way Public School every Tuesday and Friday where they spend an hour reading one on one with the children.

Ruben R. Goulart, Managing Partner of Keyser Mason Ball, LLP speaks at Lifetouch National Conference

In January of this year, Ruben Goulart attended the National Winter Conference in Winnipeg for one of the firm's long-time clients, Lifetouch Canada Inc. Ruben presented a seminar on current employment issues for the company's national management team with help from the company's internal legal counsel based in Minneapolis.

Fortunately, it was not all work for Ruben as he also had an opportunity to attend a fun evening with all participants. The evening included Olympic themed events, as well as a presentation by Lifetouch employees outlining the company's charitable initiatives in Haiti and its response to the recent crisis there."
