What's New at KMB

Ian J. Wick and Ashlee Froese are contributing authors to RGD Ontario's Professional Handbook.

RGD is in the process of developing a third edition of The Business of Graphic Design: A Professional's Handbook

In 2001, RGD released The Business of Graphic Design: A Professional's Handbook. A second edition was released in 2004. The first of its kind, this Handbook was, and still is, the only comprehensive guide to maintaining a graphic design business in Canada. The Business of Graphic Design has made a vital contribution to the professionalism of the Canadian design industry.

RGD is thrilled to be developing the third edition, scheduled for release in January 2012.

The new edition will cover a range of topics, including: project and design management, pricing, hiring and staffing, marketing creative services, job hunting, business start-up, intellectual property and industry trends. Additional features include new forms and sample agreements, sample job descriptions and more.

As always, the Handbook is used in the curriculum of college and university graphic design programs across Canada. We will be publishing 5,000 copies with the generous in-kind sponsorship of our Print Partner, Flast Reproductions; our Paper Partner, Domtar, and our Bindery Partner, Anstey Book Binding. (We are in the process of identifying potential R.G.D.- member Design Partner).

RGD Board Member Bob Hambly R.G.D., Creative Director and Founder of Hambly & Woolley, stressed the importance of the Handbook in professional practice. "Whether you are starting your career as a graphic designer or you are a seasoned pro, the RGD Professional Handbook is the source to turn to when you need guidance running your business."

Ron Beltrame R.G.D., Coordinator and Professor of the Graphic Design Program at Cambrian College, explained the use of the book in schools. “We find the RGD Professional Handbook to be an indispensable resource in all levels of our design curriculum. Students in first year use it to gain a general understanding of the scope of their chosen profession, while graduating students utilize it as a valuable resource for structuring their freelance practices and guiding their professional conduct. We look forward to the new edition with great anticipation.”

Authors for the new edition include John-Pierre Lacroix R.G.D., President, Shikatani Lacroix Brandesign Inc.; Ashlee Froese, Lawyer & Trademark Agent, Keyser Mason Ball, LLP; Eli Gembom, Manager, Segal LLP; Ian Wick, Partner, Keyser Mason Ball, LLP; Ilise Benun, Founder, Marketing Mentor; Stephen Hodges, President, Creative Niche Inc., and Judith Gregory R.G.D., Professor, George Brown College.

An Editorial Board of 12 professionals working across the country in the field of graphic design are in the process of reviewing and directing the content of the new chapters.
