Ramon V. Andal is a respected commercial and civil litigator who has years of trial experience with judges and juries, and as appellate counsel. His practice embraces all areas of business, but emphasizes complex insurance litigation, where he has an impressive success record.
Ramon counsels clients in any commercial transaction which may have an insurance component in order to completely solidify their negotiating position and to maximize and preserve their insurance coverage rights. An important aspect of his insurance coverage practice is counselling clients so as to position them competitively in potential future coverage disputes as well as guiding them in connection with policy renewal risk assessment.
Within his practice, Ramon represents both insurers and policyholders in all matters of insurance defence and insurance coverage disputes including professional malpractice; commercial general liability; claims against financial institutions; directors and officers liability; securities; employment practices liability; defamation; human rights complaints; business interruption insurance; construction; transportation; marine; property and casualty claims; catastrophic motor vehicle and other traumatic personal injury claims and environmental litigation.
Apart from his insurance practice, Ramon is an able and experienced commercial litigator with knowledge of every aspect of business law. He has dealt with major financial services companies, large sophisticated Canadian and multinational corporations, insurance brokers, investment brokers, individual investors, partnerships, property developers and managers, family-controlled private companies, churches, and not-for-profit organizations. Ramon has represented clients at all levels of Court in Ontario, the Federal Court of Canada, as well as managing disputes in foreign jurisdictions.
Through the years, Ramon worked on research and writing projects with one of Canada’s leading academic authorities and with the Insurance Bureau of Canada, as contributing editor of the Canadian Encyclopedic Digest, Insurance Law Title, and Insurance Law in Canada, Vol. 2. He practiced as a member of Canada’s preeminent Insurance Law group on Bay Street.
In public service, Ramon served as part-time presiding chair member of the Board of Inquiry (Police Services Act) and part-time presiding lawyer member of the Consent and Capacity Board (Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care) where he gained specialized knowledge in mental health law. He has acted as pro bono counsel to Filipino and Chinese community groups on human rights matters, including the Chinese Head Tax.
